HP Mini 1035NR Netbook Laptop PC

The Bottom Line

12/2/08 - HP's sophmore entry in the netbook category brings some exciting features into a more consumer oriented model but drops too many features unique to the older 2133 Mini-Note. The best feature of the HP Mini 1035NR has to be its spacious and well laid out keyboard. The larger 10.2-inch display is also one of the brightest on the market. They also made a great decision to include Bluetooth for wireless peripherals. It is too bad then that they made some big mistakes by dropping the number of peripheral ports, using a smaller and slower hard drive than their competitors and leaving the difficult to use trackpad.

Pros

  • Strong Wireless with Bluetooth
  • Roomy Keyboard For a Netbook
  • Bright Display

Cons

  • Limited Expansion Ports
  • Smaller and Slower Hard Drive
  • Short Touchpad With Poor Button Placement

Description

  • Intel Atom N270 Mobile Processor
  • 1GB PC2-5300 DDR2 Memory
  • 60GB 4200rpm SATA Hard Drive
  • 10.2" WSVGA (1024x600) LCD Display
  • Intel GMA 950 Integrated Graphics
  • Fast Ethernet, 802.11b/g Wireless, Bluetooth v2.1
  • Two USB 2.0, 2-in-1 Card Reader
  • 10.3" x 6.6" x 1" @ 2.4 lbs.
  • Windows XP Home

Guide Review - HP Mini 1035NR Netbook Laptop PC

12/2/08 - The HP Mini 1000 is their second netbook to hit the market and is very heavily based upon the previous 2133 Mini-Note. It has a very different look because of the use of black plastic shell compared to the metal one but this alone decreased the overall weight of the unit. Thankfully HP kept the keyboard design for the Mini 1000 giving it one of the best overall thanks to both its size and layout.
One of the biggest changes in the Mini 1035NR is the use of the ubiquitous Intel Atom N270 processor compared to the slower VIA C7-M. This gives it a significant boost of performance over the older 2133 Mini-Note and is more on par with similar 10-inch netbook offerings. It uses a single gigabyte of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory per the licensing restrictions of the Windows XP Home operating system.
Storage for the HP Mini 1035NR relies on a hard drive rather than flash memory. The 60GB drive is smaller than what many other hard drive based netbooks are offering. More disturbing is the slower 4200rpm spin rate of the drive compared to the 5400rpm rates of traditional laptops. This gives the HP Mini a major disadvantage for simple drive tasks such as booting up the operating system. HP really needs to consider upgrading this drive.
The display on the HP Mini 1035NR uses a 10.2-inch panel with a 1024x600 resolution. This is a bigger screen than the older 2133 Mini-Note but with a lower resolution. Thankfully, the screen is one of the brightest on the market making it very easy to use even with the glossy coating that can cause excessive reflections.
The biggest problem with the HP Mini 1000 netbooks though is the ports. It is limited to just two USB ports and an SD slot. This puts it well behind offerings from other companies. Even the VGA port requires an adapter to use.

Dell Mini 10v 10.1-inch Netbook Laptop PC

The Bottom Line

Aug 20 2009 - Dell's Mini 10v is their low cost version of their Mini 10 netbook and in many ways is a better choice. Little is sacrificed in terms of performance or design. Sure, it may have less hard drive space and switch up a few components, but it is still the same look just with a plastic exterior and fewer high end options. The biggest problem is the very small battery that will provide a very limited running time, but for $299 it does offer a fair amount.

Pros

  • Well Priced
  • Improved Keyboard Design
  • Very Compact Power Adapter

Cons

  • Short Battery Life From 3-cell Battery
  • Awkward Touchpad With Buttons Integrated Into Pad
  • Glossy Screen Causes Too Much Reflection and Glare

Description

  • Intel Atom N270 Mobile Processor
  • 1GB PC2-5400 DDR2 Memory
  • 120GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
  • 10.1-inch WSVGA (1024x576) Display With 1.3 Megapixel Webcam
  • Intel GMA 950 Graphics
  • Fast Ethernet, 802.11b/g Wireless
  • Three USB 2.0, VGA, 3-in-1 Card Reader
  • 10.3" x 7.2" x 1.1" @ 2.5 lbs.
  • Windows XP Home

Guide Review - Dell Mini 10v 10.1-inch Netbook Laptop PC

Aug 20 2009 - Dell's Mini 10v is a less expensive version of the Mini 10 . While the system has the same look as the Mini 10, the Mini 10v uses a plastic shell exterior instead the magnesium alloy. The other big change to the exterior is the removal of the HDMI video connector to a more common VGA. The most notable sacrifice in the Mini 10v is the reduction of the hard drive from the more typical 160GB down to a 120GB. It is possible to get the 10v equipped with a 160GB drive but it bumps the $299 price tag up to $349.
One nice change to the Mini 10v over the previous Mini 9 and Mini 12 designs is the keyboard. Dell has expanded the keyboard to use the full width of the netbook chassis that gives the keys a 92-percent size. They also have included the function key row unlike the Mini 9. This gives the keyboard a better overall feel but the lack of key spacing can make it more difficult to use than those that isolate the keys. They also changed the trackpad design to integrate the buttons onto either side of the pad. This is very awkward to use as it can often cause the cursor to move if you don't press just right on the pad.
The 10.1-inch screen of the Mini 10v is nice and bright. The real issue is the glossy coating that Dell uses. In low light conditions it is just fine. Take it outside or use it with a bright light behind the user and the glare on the screen can make it nearly impossible to use.
In keeping the costs down, Dell only ships the Mini 10v with a 3-cell battery pack. During testing with video playback, the system was just short of reaching two and a half hours of use. This is fairly short and will leave users needed to recharge frequently. Thankfully, Dell's power adapter is one of the smaller and lightest on the market making it much more convenient to carry with the netbook.

 The good
 The bad

The good
The bad

The good
The bad

The good
The bad

The good
The bad

The good
The bad
Trackpad mousenya kecil, sehingga sedikit menyusahkan dalam pengandalian kursornya.
Apakah layak beli?

The good
The bad

The good
The bad

The good
Walaupun sekilas mempunyai fitur yang sama seperti 10.2-inch display, Windows XP, 1.6GHz N270 Intel Atom CPU dan hard drives up to 160GB. Dan untuk baterai cukup tahan lama.
The bad
Sampai sekarang kami belum menemukan kelemahan berarti.

The good
The bad
Mungkin belum adanya integrated HSDPA, sepertinya bukan masalah berarti.

Suami pernah berkata cerai

PertanyaanAssalamu'alaikum

Apakah Jatuh Talak ketika Diucapkan Saat Marah?

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah Wabarakatuh
Langsung saja Ust.

Cara rujuk sebelum habis masa iddah
Asalkan Anda melakukannya sebelum habis masa ‘iddahnya.
Wallahu a’lam bishshawab, wassalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh,

Membuat bootable USB berbasis DOS

By Johanes Gunawan | July 20, 2007

Removeable bootable disk pertama kali diperkenalkan melalui media floopy disk.

Saya memiliki 2 option :

1. Memiliki floppy disk.
* Donwload boot98se.exe dari http://www.bootdisk.com
* Masukkan floppy disk ke dalam floppy drive ke dalam drive a
* Install HP Format USB Utility yang bisa anda dapatkan di http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/serveroptions/us/download/20306.html jika linknya tidak bisa diklik silahkan download di sini HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool Version 2.0.6
* Jalankan software HP Format USB Utility.
* Format USB anda dan tick Create a DOS startup disk serta tick using DOS system Files located at A:\
*
* Klik Start jika sudah siap. Tunggu sampai proses selesai
* USB siap digunakan
* Jalankan software HP Format USB Utility.
* Download file MS Dos File System
* Extract dan put this files somewhere.
* Jalankan software HP Format USB Utility.
* Format USB anda dan tick Create a DOS startup disk serta tick using DOS system Files located at dan arahkan file msdos system files yang terdapat di folder tempat anda menyimpan.
*
* Klik Start jika sudah siap. Tunggu sampai proses selesai
* USB siap digunakan

Selamat mencoba…

USB Boot DISK

http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm

How To Boot From A USB Flash Drive

For starters this is still a new science and many people have had good luck with at least one of these methods and others have not. Note that flash drives are often also called thumb drives, keychain drives, pendrives, etc. The NEWEST methods are listed last on this page, starting with Method 6 for Vista/Win7

A FEW THINGS YOU NEED TO CONSIDER IN ADVANCE.

1. The PC has to support booting from a USB flash drive. There may be anywhere from 1-3 items to change in the BIOS to make this possible assuming your BIOS supports it. Some bios's may refer to your flash drive as a USB floppy or USB zip. Of course there are exceptions, perhaps some are covered here.
2. The USB flash drive must support booting from it in general.
3. The flash drive must contain the boot/system files.
4. The flash drive must have bootsector area. This is done with special utilities.
5. References to "A:" drive lines in the autoexec.bat and/or config.sys files you copy to the drive after you make it bootable may result in errors.
6. You "may" have to format your floppy disk first in WinXP before you create a bootdisk as XP may "not" like working later on with a disk formatted otherwise.
7. Included below is a bootable ISO of DOS 7.1 which may be used with some of these methods if you do not have a 1.44 drive.

METHODS

Method 1 - Make your flash drive bootable using Bart's mkbt util:
http://www.nu2.nu/mkbt/ | Alt: mkbt20.zip

Put a bootable floppy disk in your A: drive or create one using Windows.
Download mkbt20.zip and unpack to to new temp folder you create.
Go to the temp folder.
Extract the bootsector from the bootable floppy disk. eg Open a DOS Window and go to the directory where you extracted MKBT. Type:

mkbt -c a: bootsect.bin

The boot sectors from the bootable floppy disk have just been saved to a file in the temp folder you created.

Format the flash drive in FAT or FAT16.

Copy the bootsector to the flash drive. Open a DOS Window and go to the folder where you extracted MKBT. Type:

mkbt -x bootsect.bin Z:

"Z" represents the flash drive drive Letter. So if your flash drive has another drive letter, then change the "Z" accordingly.

Now you can [grin] "should" be able to copy the utils you need to the pen drive.

Method 2 - Try these 2 HP/Compaq USB Flash Drive Utilities. They work with many other brands of flash drives as well.

HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool Version 2.0.6

HP Drive Key Boot Utility Version 7.41
Download

Method 3 - Third Party Links

Boot off USB by floppy, CD, or NT boot menu when your computer doesn't support it
"I use it to boot off of USB by floppy when the computer doesn't support it - although in this mode it cannot save changes made to the setup." said Josh.

Method 4 - A Bootdisk.Com Visitor Suggested

Here is my another method for creating dos bootable USB sticks using windows format.

1. From Win98 DOS-Prompt type "SYS {USBDriveLetter}:" or "FORMAT {USBDriveLetter} /U /S". If from WinXp then from start->run command.com execute format.exe copied from win95 or win98.

OR

2. Simply by enabling copy system files in windows explorer format window. By default it is disabled for non-floppy drives. To enable it use windows enabler program from http://www.angelfire.com/falcon/speedload/Enabler.htm an whoila it works.

Method 5 - Another Bootdisk.Com Fan Suggested - Thanks Keith

First if you don't have a physical floppy drive (and don't want one) you can use the [free] "virtual floppy driver" from here:

http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/vfd.html

With that you get an A: drive and can manipulate a floppy image as if you were using real floppy. You can then use that image to make a bootable CD. It's not that user friendly but once you get how it works it does work perfectly.

Even cooler you can use a "raw write" utility like dd for windows to write the floppy image directly to your USB thumb drive. Even without that famous HP utility to do the magic this will make your USB thumb drive bootable. The 'dd' ported to Windows is located here:

http://www.chrysocome.net/dd

Another trick you can use with that dd utility involves MS VritualPC (which is free). You can create a virtual machine/virtual hard drive, set it up the way you want then use dd to "raw write" the virtual hard drive image to the thumb drive; this will make the thumb drive identical to the image, including bootable (again, no HP utilities required).

Of course, your thumb drive will effectively have the capacity the size if the image in question (your 1GB flash drive will effectively be 1.44 Megs).

Method 6 - Don Wrote

bootable USB guide, here we assume that you are using either Vista or Windows 7 to create a bootable USB.

1. Insert your USB (4GB+ preferable) stick to the system and backup all the data from the USB as we are going to format the USB to make it as bootable.

2. Open elevated Command Prompt. To do this, type in CMD in Start menu search field and hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter. Alternatively, navigate to Start > All programs >Accessories > right click on Command Prompt and select run as administrator.

3. When the Command Prompt opens, enter the following command:

DISKPART and hit enter.

LIST DISK and hit enter.

Once you enter the LIST DISK command, it will show the disk number of your USB drive. In the below image my USB drive disk no is Disk 1.

4. In this step you need to enter all the below commands one by one and hit enter. As these commands are self explanatory, you can easily guess what these commands do.

SELECT DISK 1 (Replace DISK 1 with your disk number)

CLEAN

CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY

SELECT PARTITION 1

ACTIVE

FORMAT FS=NTFS

(Format process may take few seconds)
ASSIGN

EXIT

Don’t close the command prompt as we need to execute one more command at the next step. Just minimize it.

5. Insert your Windows DVD in the optical drive and note down the drive letter of the optical drive and USB media. Here I use “D” as my optical (DVD) drive letter and “H” as my USB drive letter.

6. Go back to command prompt and execute the following commands:

D:CD BOOT and hit enter. Where “D” is your DVD drive letter.

CD BOOT and hit enter to see the below message.
BOOTSECT.EXE/NT60 H:

(Where “H” is your USB drive letter)

7. Copy Windows DVD contents to USB.

You are done with your bootable USB. You can now use this bootable USB as bootable DVD on any computer that comes with USB boot feature (most of the current motherboards support this feature).

Note that this bootable USB guide will not work if you are trying to make a bootable USB on XP computer.

How to Open an Encrypted File?

Kalo tidak ya...say goodbye to your file....

How to choose PSU unit

Nice Dream, today i found an articel about how to choose power supply unit, i catch it from forum site.

How to Choose A Power supply
this is a thread that i made for another forum and i decide to post it here because nilpo wanted people to post more content
First off, I have to thank Komet (he's not on this forum)
and Snod blatter
This is the PSU thread for all of you who want/need to buy a new Power Supply.
The first thing you want to notice, when you see on a videocard box or something , that the psu requirements are like 450watts with 34amps on the 12v rail. It doesnt mean that the card needs all that

for the graphics card itself, its normally for the entire system that you have.

Calculating your minimum power needs for a power supplie
---------------------------------------------------------
Go here to calculate your wattage needs:
Power Supply Wattage Calculator

The point of having more than one rail for the +12v is thus:
Manufacturers did the dual, triple etc rail because having lots of amps (like say more than 34a with 70% efficiency could blow up the transistors), so they made the dual rails to balance the load on the transistors.
see how much you need and add about 35-50watts and you will be able to see how much wattage you will need.
Good power supply brands(the ones that people know):
---------------------------------------------------------
Seasonic
Antec
Enermax Liberty
Fortron (FSP Group)
OCZ
PC Power & Cooling
Silverstone
Tagan
Sparkle
Scythe
Zippy
Emacs

The crappy ones:
---------------------------------------------------------
Q-Tec(all over ebay)
Powmax & Diablotek(both made from Leadman)
Powerup(more like power down)
ATADC
JPAC
Atrix
Just PC
any generic psu
Logisys
Raidmax(cheap ones)
Ultra
Xion
Turbo links (the ones that comes in the Aspire cases)
Okia
Apex
Deer
Allied
Achieve
Allied
Codegen
Demon
Devanni
Dynapower
Eagle
Epower
L&C
Linkworld
MGE
Turbo
X-superalien
X-treme
Magna

The OK ones:
---------------------------------------------------------
Cooler Master
Enermax
Thermaltake (the cheapest ones, the costy ones are much better, but have weak +12 rails)
Aerocool (not bad at all)
Sunbeam
Rosewill
Kingwin
epower/tagan(the tagan series)
TOPOWER
Channelwell

Power Supplies that no one knows of, but are good:
---------------------------------------------------------
Super Flower
In Win (power man series, made with fortron parts)
Sytrin Nextherm
Enhance
I-Star

Between ok and crap:
---------------------------------------------------------
Aspire(rated at high wattage with low rails and a bit low on the voltages)
Enlight
Coolmax
Rosewill

Problems with some good psus out there:
---------------------------------------------------------
Antec: a little low on the voltages on rails
Enermax: they tend to die instantly without any unstability before
Power PC & Cooling: Real loud!
Sunbeam: (Sunbeam NUUO), fans may develop noisy/raspy bearings.

Find The real maker of your Power Supply :
---------------------------------------------------------
Like for example, if it says its an antec it doesnt mean its made from antec.
So i found a list on www.extremeoverclocking.com of some popular psu numbers
so on the psu sticker theres a kind of backward RU with a little code under it that starts with a E
so i got this L&C psu it says:

RU
e164554
so on the list it says it made from L&c

Measuring voltages on psu rails :
---------------------------------------------------------
this is a how to measure voltage rails to see if your psu is giving correct votages. if the voltages are too low your system could be unstable and if it is to high the parts could die faster.
im taking this article off a devhardware thread (Devhardware Forum) it was made by madhyena.(yeah i stole some of your pictures sorry)
yes some motherboards out there can measure rails and you can see them with speed fan but they are not always accurate. so with this test you will be sure if its giving the correct voltage.

NOOB CAUTION :
if you are a total noob i do not recommend doing this because if you short something out, it could damage your psu.

ok thats with what connectors you'll be measuring rails, now if you dont know how to use a multimeter well i dont think your supposed to have one.

now to measure the voltages set your multimeter to 20 , put the black wire in a ground in the molex or mobo connector(in a black wire) and the red in the voltage wire you will be measuring and the multimeter will give you the voltage
so boot your comp and measure the voltages in post, windows loading, idleing, and gaming and if there too low or too high i recommand you to change your psu.

motherboard :

now to measure curent on the motherboard connector, do it like this :

a molex :

ok these are the voltages that your supposed to have between the minimum and the maximum

Memory PC-XXXX What is the meaning.. ???

From Bro Turb0plu - member of yahoo answer

DDR2-400 = PC2-3200
DDR2-533 = PC2-4200/PC2-4300
DDR2-667 = PC2-5300/PC2-5400
DDR2-800 = PC2-6400
DDR2-1066 = PC2-8500/PC2-8600

CL = Clock Latency

Makin kecil ( Timing makin ketat )makin bagus ,makin cpet makin mahal

4gb itu physical memorry ram, makin besar mkin knceng

DDR 3 1600 : yg dimaksud 1600 yaitu frekuensinya 1600 mhz,, makin tinggi frekuensi makin baik, makin kenceng
( ibaratnya km nghantem musuh sbnyk 16 pukulan / menit dgn tenaga yg sama, psti lbh efektif drpd mukul musuh sbnyk 10 pukulan / menit )

pada umumnya : DDR II : 667mhz, 800 mhz, 1066mhz
DDR III : 1200mhz -- dst
sayangnya makin besar frekuensi, makin besar pula latencynya ( jdi RAM berfreq besar tapi berlatency kecil pasti mahalll bgt )

PC3-12800 :
PC3 = DDR 3 ( Double Data Rate 3 )
12800 = Kode nama

Masked Rider The Next...

Two years after the events of Kamen Rider the First, a strange series of bizarre murders occur with the victims mutilated in a most gruesome fashion while pop star Chiharu's "Platinum Smile" is being played, becoming an urban legend. Meanwhile, Takeshi Hongo has become a high school science teacher with a troublesome class with one catching his attention, a troubled girl named Kotomi Kikuma who was best friends with Chiharu and is worried about her. By the time Hongo and she find a dying "Chiharu", they learn she's actually an imposter as the Shocker Inhumanoid Chainsaw Lizard arrives with the six Shocker Riders to carry out the task of executing Hongo, forcing him to reveal himself in as Kamen Rider 1 to Kotomi before escaping his hunters. At around the same time, Hayato Ichimonji is shown still alive but slowly weakening due to his body's rejection of the cybernetic changes which made him Kamen Rider 2.

The next day, after saving Kotomi from some punks by exposing his physical ability, Hongo accept Kotomi's offer to help in finding Chiharu by finding her older brother Shiro Kazami, who is former president of the rising IT enterprise ExaStream, which is tied to the mysterious disappearance of its staff two months prior. Making their way to his holiday home to meet Kazami, Hongo and Kotomi soon learn that he in league with Shocker as Chainsaw Lizard and the Shocker Riders battle Kamen Rider on as Kazami joins the fray as a Shocker Inhumanoid code-named "V3". After chasing down Rider 1 in a high speed chase across the countryside, V3 and the Shocker Riders take down Rider 1 until Kamen Rider 2 re-appears to cover Rider 1's escape. But after realizing his "sister" was another imposter, Kazami reveals the incident at ExaStream was a Shocker experiment of Nanobots designed to convert all humans in Japan into cyborgs, with him being a survivor of the experiment. The three riders later learn that Kotomi found the other girl, revealing the gruesome fate the real Chiharu suffered as she and predecessor were involved, horrifying Kazami as Kotomi is telepathically shown the truth of the real Chiharu's final moments as "Chiharu" runs off and eventually is brutally murdered with the manager and the record dealer who were covering up her death as Kotomi uses Platinum Smile to communicate with Chiharu, learning that she's still alive as the "ghost" took its leave.

After Kazami reveals to Hongo that Shocker's foreign branch brought a shipment of nanobots to spread them across the nation, Rider 1 arrives to intercept the convoy while battling Scissors Jaguar, the mastermind behind the Nanobot Operation, with Rider 2 arriving to back him up as the battle brings to the Legend of Gathering in an all out fight for the nanobots. Though the Double Riders were overwhelmed, the tables are turned as V3 arrives to support them. While the Double Riders kill Scissors Jaguar, V3 manages to destroy Chainsaw Lizard and the nanobots before coming face to face with Chiharu, horrifically mutated by the nanobots into a monster as she pleas her brother to put her out of her misery. Though reluctant to do it, Kazami executes the V3 Punch to honor his sister's wish to die rather than live as a monster in agonizing pain. After the Triple Riders escape the burning restaurant, Ichimonji takes his leave to spend his final moments in bliss at a Ginza bar he regulars, while Kazami decides to start a new life for himself. As for Hongo, he is forced to quit his job after a few complaints made for his earlier stunt as Kotomi decides to walk him home. The Platinum Smile incidents seemingly end as the credits roll.

However, though Chiharu finally died, the "curse of Platinum Smile" is still in effect.

50 Windows 7 tips, triks and secrets

Part 1 : New applets and features in Windows 7

They said Windows 7 was just a cosmetic upgrade, a more polished version of Vista with little to offer beyond the new wallpaper.
They couldn't have been more wrong.
Look beyond the headlines about interface tweaks and you'll find Windows 7 is crammed with lesser known, but still important, new and enhanced features, which taken together deliver improved performance and productivity, better troubleshooting, stronger security and a whole lot more.
Read on for 50 ways in which Windows 7 will make a real difference to your PC.

1. Problem Steps Recorder

As the local PC guru you're probably very used to friends and family asking for help with their computer problems, yet having no idea how to clearly describe what's going on. It's frustrating, but Microsoft feels your pain, and Windows 7 will include an excellent new solution in the Problem Steps Recorder.
When any app starts misbehaving under Windows 7 then all your friends need do is click Start, type PSR and press Enter, then click Start Record. If they then work through whatever they're doing then the Problem Steps Recorder will record every click and keypress, take screen grabs, and package everything up into a single zipped MHTML file when they're finished, ready for emailing to you. It's quick, easy and effective, and will save you hours of troubleshooting time.

2. Burn images

Windows 7 finally introduces a feature that other operating systems have had for years - the ability to burn ISO images to CDs or DVDs. And it couldn't be much easier to use. Just double-click the ISO image, choose the drive with the blank disc, click Burn and watch as your disc is created.

3. Create and mount VHD files

Microsoft's Virtual PC creates its virtual machine hard drives in VHD files, and Windows 7 can now mount these directly so you can access them in the host system. Click Start, type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter, then click Action > Attach VHD and choose the file you'd like to mount. It will then appear as a virtual drive in Explorer and can be accessed, copied or written just like any other drive.
Click Action > Create VHD and you can now create a new virtual drive of your own (right-click it, select Initialise Disk, and after it's set up right-click the unallocated space and select New Simple Volume to set this up). Again, you'll be left with a virtual drive that behaves just like any other, where you can drag and drop files, install programs, test partitioning software or do whatever you like. But it's actually just this VHD file on your real hard drive which you can easily back up or share with others. Right-click the disk (that's the left-hand label that says "Disk 2" or whatever) and select Detach VHD to remove it.
The command line DISKPART utility has also been upgraded with tools to detach a VHD file, and an EXPAND command to increase a virtual disk's maximum size. Don't play around with this unless you know what you're doing, though - it's all too easy to trash your system.

4. Troubleshoot problems

If some part of Windows 7 is behaving strangely, and you don't know why, then click Control Panel > Find and fix problems (or 'Troubleshooting') to access the new troubleshooting packs. These are simple wizards that will resolve common problems, check your settings, clean up your system and more.

5. Startup repair

If you've downloaded Windows 7 (and even if you haven't) it's a good idea to create a system repair disc straight away in case you run into problems booting the OS later on. Click Start > Maintenance > Create a System Repair Disc, and let Windows 7 build a bootable emergency disc. If the worst does happen then it could be the only way to get your PC running again.

6. Take control

Tired of the kids installing dubious software or running applications you'd rather they left alone? AppLocker is a new Windows 7 feature that ensures users can only run the programs you specify. Don't worry, that's easier to set up than it sounds: you can create a rule to allow everything signed by a particular publisher, so choose Microsoft, say, and that one rule will let you run all signed Microsoft applications. Launch GPEDIT.MSC and go to Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Application Control Policies > AppLocker to get a feel for how this works.

7. Calculate more

At first glance the Windows 7 calculator looks just like Vista's version, but explore the Mode menu and you'll see powerful new Statistics and Programmer views. And if you're clueless about bitwise manipulation, then try the Options menu instead. This offers many different unit conversions (length, weight, volume and more), date calculations (how many days between two dates?), and spreadsheet-type templates to help you calculate vehicle mileage, mortgage rates and more.
Don't take any Windows 7 applet at face value, then - there are some very powerful new features hidden in the background. Be sure to explore every option in all Windows applets to ensure you don't miss anything important.

8. Switch to a projector

Windows 7 now provides a standard way to switch your display from one monitor to another, or a projector - just press Win+P or run DisplaySwitch.exe and choose your preferred display. (This will have no effect if you've only one display connected.)

9. Get a power efficiency report

If you have a laptop, you can use the efficiency calculator to get Windows 7 to generate loads of useful information about its power consumption. Used in the right way, this can help you make huge gains in terms of battery life and performance. To do this you must open a command prompt as an administrator by typing 'cmd' in Start Search, and when the cmd icon appears, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
Then at the command line, just type in 'powercfg -energy' (without quotes) and hit Return, and Windows 7 will scan your system looking for ways to improve power efficiency. It will then publish the results in an HTML file, usually in the System32 folder. Just follow the path it gives you to find your report.

10. Understanding System Restore

Using System Restore in previous versions of Windows has been something of a gamble. There's no way of telling which applications or drivers it might affect - you just have to try it and see.
Windows 7 is different. Right-click Computer, select Properties > System Protection > System Restore > Next, and choose the restore point you'd like to use. Click the new button to 'Scan for affected programs' and Windows will tell you which (if any) programs and drivers will be deleted or recovered by selecting this restore point.

11. Set the time zone

System administrators will appreciate the new command line tzutil.exe utility, which lets you set a PC's time zone from scripts. If you wanted to set a PC to Greenwich Mean Time, for instance, you'd use the command
tzutil /s "gmt standard time"
The command "tzutil /g" displays the current time zone, "tzutil /l" lists all possible time zones, and "tzutil /?" displays details on how the command works.

12. Calibrate your screen

The colours you see on your screen will vary depending on your monitor, graphics cards settings, lighting and more, yet most people use the same default Windows colour profile. And that means a digital photo you think looks perfect might appear very poor to everybody else. Fortunately Windows 7 now provides a Display Colour Calibration Wizard that helps you properly set up your brightness, contrast and colour settings, and a ClearType tuner to ensure text is crisp and sharp. Click Start, type DCCW and press Enter to give it a try.

Part 2 : Windows 7 interface tweaks

13. Right-click everything

At first glance Windows 7 bears a striking resemblance to Vista, but there's an easy way to begin spotting the differences - just right-click things.
Right-click an empty part of the desktop, for instance, and you'll find a menu entry to set your screen resolution. No need to go browsing through the display settings any more.
Right-click the Explorer icon on the taskbar for speedy access to common system folders: Documents, Pictures, the Windows folder, and more.
And if you don't plan on using Internet Explorer then you probably won't want its icon permanently displayed on the taskbar. Right-click the icon, select 'Unpin this program from the taskbar', then go install Firefox, instead.

14. Desktop slideshow

Windows 7 comes with some very attractive new wallpapers, and it's not always easy to decide which one you like the best. So why not let choose a few, and let Windows display them all in a desktop slideshow? Right-click an empty part of the desktop, select Personalise > Desktop Background, then hold down Ctrl as you click on the images you like. Choose how often you'd like the images to be changed (anything from daily to once every 10 seconds), select Shuffle if you'd like the backgrounds to appear in a random order, then click Save Changes and enjoy the show.

15. RSS-powered wallpaper

And if a slideshow based on your standard wallpaper isn't enough, then you can always create a theme that extracts images from an RSS feed. For example, Long Zheng has created a few sample themes to illustrate how it works. And Jamie Thompson takes this even further, with a theme that always displays the latest BBC news and weather on your desktop.

16. Recover screen space

The new Windows 7 taskbar acts as one big quick launch toolbar that can hold whatever program shortcuts you like (just right-click one and select Pin To Taskbar). And that's fine, except it does consume a little more screen real estate than we'd like. Shrink it to a more manageable size by right-clicking the Start orb, then Properties > Taskbar > Use small icons > OK.

17. Restore the Quick Launch Toolbar

If you're unhappy with the new taskbar, even after shrinking it, then it only takes a moment to restore the old Quick Launch Toolbar.
Right-click the taskbar, choose Toolbars > New Toolbar, type "%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch" (less the quotes) into the Folder box and click Select Folder.
Now right-click the taskbar, clear 'Lock the taskbar', and you should see the Quick Launch toolbar, probably to the right. Right-click its divider, clear Show Text and Show Title to minimise the space it takes up. Complete the job by right-clicking the bar and selecting View > Small Icons for the true retro look.

18. Custom power switch

By default, Windows 7 displays a plain text 'Shut down' button on the Start menu, but it only takes a moment to change this action to something else. If you reboot your PC a few times every day then that might make more sense as a default action: right-click the Start orb, select Properties and set the 'Power boot action' to 'Restart' to make it happen.

19. Auto arrange your desktop

If your Windows 7 desktop has icons scattered everywhere then you could right-click it and select View > Auto arrange, just as in Vista. But a simpler solution is just to press and hold down F5, and Windows will automatically arrange its icons for you.

20. Disable smart window arrangement

Windows 7 features interesting new ways to intelligently arrange your windows, so that (for example) if you drag a window to the top of the screen then it will maximise. We like the new system, but if you find it distracting then it's easily disabled. Run REGEDIT, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop, set WindowArrangementActive to 0, reboot, and your windows will behave just as they always did.

21. Browse your tasks

If you prefer the keyboard over the mouse, you will love browsing the taskbar using this nifty shortcut. Press Windows and T, and you move the focus to the left-most icon on the taskbar. Then use your arrow keys to change the focus to other icons, and you get a live preview of every window.

22. Display your drives

Click Computer in Windows 7 and you might see a strange lack of drives, but don't panic, it's just Microsoft trying to be helpful: drives like memory card readers are no longer displayed if they're empty. We think it's an improvement, but if you disagree then it's easy to get your empty drives back. Launch Explorer, click Tools > Folder Options > View and clear 'Hide empty drives in the computer folder'.

23. See more detail

The new and improved Windows 7 magnifier offers a much easier way to zoom in on any area of the screen. Launch it and you can now define a scale factor and docking position, and once activated it can track your keyboard focus around the screen. Press Tab as you move around a dialog box, say, and it'll automatically zoom in on the currently active control.

Part 3 : Useful Windows 7 Enhancements

24. Hiding the Windows Live Messenger icon

If you use Windows Live Messenger a lot, you'll have noticed that the icon now resides on the taskbar, where you can easily change status and quickly send an IM to someone. If you prefer to keep Windows Live Messenger in the system tray, where it's been for previous releases, just close Windows Live Messenger, edit the shortcut properties and set the application to run in Windows Vista compatibility mode.

25. Customise UAC

Windows Vista's User Account Control was a good idea in practice, but poor implementation put many people off - it raised far too many alerts. Fortunately Windows 7 displays less warnings by default, and lets you further fine-tune UAC to suit your preferred balance between security and a pop-up free life (Start > Control Panel > Change User Account Control Settings).

26. Use Sticky Notes

The Sticky Notes app is both simpler and more useful in Windows 7. Launch StikyNot.exe and you can type notes at the keyboard; right-click a note to change its colour; click the + sign on the note title bar to add another note; and click a note and press Alt + 4 to close the note windows (your notes are automatically saved).

27. Open folder in new process

By default Windows 7 opens folders in the same process. This saves system resources, but means one folder crash can bring down the entire shell. If your system seems unstable, or you're doing something in Explorer that regularly seems to causes crashes, then open Computer, hold down Shift, right-click on your drive and select Open in New Process. The folder will now be launched in a separate process, and so a crash is less likely to affect anything else.

28. Watch more videos

Windows Media Player 12 is a powerful program, but it still won't play all the audio and video files you'll find online. Fortunately the first freeware Windows 7 codecs package [shark007.net/win7codecs.html] has been released, and installing it could get your troublesome multimedia files playing again.

29. Preview fonts

Open the Fonts window in Windows XP and Vista and you'll see the font names, probably with icons to tell you whether they're TrueType or OpenType, but that's about it. Windows 7 sees some useful font-related improvements.
Open the new fonts window and you'll find a little preview for every font, giving you a quick idea of how they're going to look.
The tedium of scrolling through multiple entries for each family, like Times New Roman, Times New Roman Bold, Times New Roman Bold Italic and so on, has finally ended. There's now just a single entry for each font (though you can still see all other members of the family).
And there's a new OpenType font, Gabriola, added to the mix. It's an attractive script font, well worth a try the next time you need a stylish document that stands out from the crowd.

30. Restore your gadgets

Windows 7 has tightened up its security by refusing to run gadgets if UAC has been turned off, so limiting the damage malicious unsigned gadgets can do to your system. If you've disabled UAC, miss your gadgets and are happy to accept the security risk, though, there's an easy Registry way to get everything back to normal. Run REGEDIT, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sidebar\Settings, create a new DWORD value called AllowElevatedProcess and set it to 1. Your gadgets should start working again right away.

31. New WordPad formats

By default WordPad will save documents in Rich Text Format, just as before. But browse the Save As Format list and you'll see you can also save (or open, actually) files in the Office 2007 .docx or OpenDocument .odt formats.

32. Protect your data

USB flash drives are convenient, portable, and very easy to lose. Which is a problem, especially if they're carrying sensitive data. Fortunately Windows 7 has the solution: encrypt your documents with an extension of Microsoft's BitLocker technology, and only someone with the password will be able to access it. Right-click your USB flash drive, select Turn on BitLocker and follow the instructions to protect your private files.

33. Minimise quickly with shake

If you have multiple windows open on your desktop and things are getting too cluttered, it used to be a time-consuming process to close them all down. In Windows 7 you can use the Aero Shake feature to minimise everything in seconds, using a cool mouse gesture. Grab the title bar of the window you wish to keep open and give it a shake, and rejoice in a clear desktop area.

34. Configure your favourite music

The Windows 7 Media Centre now comes with an option to play your favourite music, which by default creates a changing list of songs based on your ratings, how often you play them, and when they were added (it's assumed you'll prefer songs you've added in the last 30 days). If this doesn't work then you can tweak how Media Centre decides what a "favourite" tune is- click Tasks > Settings > Music > Favourite Music and configure the program to suit your needs.

35. Customise System Restore

There was very little you could do to configure System Restore in Vista, but Windows 7 improves the situation with a couple of useful setup options.
Click the Start orb, right-click Computer and select Properties > System Protection > Configure, and set the Max Usage value to a size that suits your needs (larger to hold more restore points, smaller to save disk space).
And if you don't need System Restore to save Windows settings then choose the "Only restore previous versions of files" option. Windows 7 won't back up your Registry, which means you'll squeeze more restore points and file backups into the available disk space. System Restore is much less likely to get an unbootable PC working again, though, so use this trick at your own risk.

36. Run As

Hold down Shift, right-click any program shortcut, and you'll see an option to run the program as a different user, handy if you're logged in to the kids' limited account and need to run something with higher privileges. This isn't really a new feature - Windows XP had a Run As option that did the same thing - but Microsoft stripped it out of Vista, so it's good to see it's had a change of heart.

37. Search privacy

By default Windows 7 will remember your PC search queries, and display the most recent examples when searching in Windows Explorer. If you're sharing a PC and don't want everyone to see your searches, then launch GPEDIT.MSC, go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer, double-click "Turn off display of recent search entries..." and click Enabled > OK.

38. Tweak PC volume

By default Windows 7 will now automatically reduce the volume of your PC's sounds whenever it detects you're making or receiving PC-based phone calls. If this proves annoying (or maybe you'd like it to turn off other sounds altogether) then you can easily change the settings accordingly. Just right-click the speaker icon in your taskbar, select Sounds > Communications, and tell Windows what you'd like it to do

Part 4 : Windows 7 Performance and Productivity Tips

39. Find bottlenecks

From what we've seen so far Windows 7 is already performing better than Vista, but if your PC seems sluggish then it's now much easier to uncover the bottleneck. Click Start, type RESMON and press Enter to launch the Resource Monitor, then click the CPU, Memory, Disk or Network tabs. Windows 7 will immediately show which processes are hogging the most system resources.
The CPU view is particularly useful, and provides something like a more powerful version of Task Manager. If a program has locked up, for example, then right-click its name in the list and select Analyze Process. Windows will then try to tell you why it's hanging - the program might be waiting for another process, perhaps - which could give you the information you need to fix the problem.

40. Keyboard shortcuts

Windows 7 supports several useful new keyboard shortcuts.
Alt+P
Display/ hide the Explorer preview pane
Windows Logo+G
Display gadgets in front of other windows
Windows Logo++ (plus key)
Zoom in, where appropriate
Windows Logo+- (minus key)
Zoom out, where appropriate
Windows Logo+Up
Maximise the current window
Windows Logo+Down
Minimise the current window
Windows Logo+Left
Snap to the left hand side of the screen
Windows Logo+Right
Snap to the right hand side of the screen
Windows Logo+Home
Minimise/ restore everything except the current window

41. Faster program launches

If you've launched one instance of a program but want to start another, then don't work your way back through the Start menu. It's much quicker to just hold down Shift and click on the program's icon (or middle-click it), and Windows 7 will start a new instance for you.

42. Speedy video access

Want faster access to your Videos folder? Windows 7 now lets you add it to the Start menu. Just right-click the Start orb, click Properties > Start Menu > Customize, and set the Videos option to "Display as a link". If you've a TV tuner that works with Windows 7 then you'll appreciate the new option to display the Recorded TV folder on the Start menu, too.

43. Run web searches

The Windows 7 search tool can now be easily extended to search online resources, just as long as someone creates an appropriate search connector. To add Flickr support, say, visit I Started Something, click Download the Connector, choose the Open option and watch as it's downloaded (the file is tiny, it'll only take a moment). A "Flickr Search" option will be added to your Searches folder, and you'll be able to search images from your desktop.
A multitude of other ready-made searches, such as Google and YouTube, can be downloaded from the windowsclub.com website.

44. Schedule Media Centre downloads

You can now tell Windows Media Centre to download data at a specific time, perhaps overnight, a useful way to prevent it sapping your bandwidth for the rest of the day. Launch Media Centre, go to Tasks > Settings > General > Automatic Download Options, and set the download start and stop times that you'd like it to use.

45. Multi-threaded Robocopies

Anyone who's ever used the excellent command-line robocopy tool will appreciate the new switches introduced with Windows 7. Our favourite, /MT, can improve speed by carrying out multi-threaded copies with the number of threads you specify (you can have up to 128, though that might be going a little too far). Enter robocopy /? at a command line for the full details.

46. Really remove the sidebar

At first glance you might think Windows 7 has got rid of the sidebar, but don't be fooled. Gadgets are still hosted by the Sidebar.exe process, it's just that this is now launched automatically when Windows boots. If you don't plan on ever using gadgets then you could delete the Sidebar Registry entry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, and recover a small amount of RAM. That might be a little risky, though, as we're not quite sure what else the sidebar process does in Windows 7.
The safest approach is to disable it temporarily by launching MSCONFIG.EXE, clicking the Startup tab and clearing the box next to the Startup entry. Now reboot and test Windows 7 for a day or two to confirm everything is still working, before
finally deleting the sidebar Registry entry.

47. Load IE faster

Some Internet Explorer add-ons can take a while to start, dragging down the browser's performance, but at least IE8 can now point a finger at the worst resource hogs. Click Tools > Manage Add-ons, check the Load Time in the right-hand column, and you'll immediately see which browser extensions are slowing you down.

48. An Alt+Tab alternative

You want to access one of the five Explorer windows you have open, but there are so many other programs running that Alt+Tab makes it hard to pick out what you need. The solution? Hold down the Ctrl key while you click on the Explorer icon. Windows 7 will then cycle through the Explorer windows only, a much quicker way to locate the right one. And of course this works with any application that has multiple windows open.

49. Block annoying alerts

Just like Vista, Windows 7 will display a suitably stern warning if it thinks your antivirus, firewall or other security settings are incorrect.
But unlike Vista, if you disagree then you can now turn off alerts on individual topics. If you no longer want to see warnings just because you've dared to turn off the Windows firewall, say, then click Control Panel > System and Security > Action Centre > Change Action Centre settings, clear the Network Firewall box and click OK.

50. Parallel defrags

The standard Windows 7 defragger offers a little more control than we saw in Vista, and the command line version also has some interesting new features. The /r switch will defrag multiple drives in parallel, for instance (they'll obviously need to be physically separate drives for this to be useful). The /h switch runs the defrag at a higher than normal priority, and the /u switch provides regular progress reports so you can see exactly what's going on. Enter the command
defrag /c /h /u /r

in a command window to speedily defrag a system with multiple drives, or enter defrag /? to view the new options for yourself.
